Deborah Bakos is a painter based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She holds a Bachelor of Education in English and Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University and a Certificate of Fine Arts/Painting from Emily Carr University. Deborah’s 14 year career as a Humanities educator and extensive travel provide fertile fodder for her photo-based, mixed media work.
Given any kind of stage, I have moral obligation as an artist to speak up for equality. My paintings address issues around gender identity and the body politics that shape our beliefs and create our divides.
Deborah exhibits locally and internationally. Her writing about art and her community has been published by Art Avenue Magazine, Opus Art Supplies Magazine, The Vancouver Sun and by the University of Victoria Centre for Addictions Research. Deborah is also a featured artist in US and Italy based Art Book Publications. Her work can be found in private and public collections in Canada, Europe and Asia.
